In FOUR; INTERWOVEN, a concept quartet by Erika Ji, four musician-storytellers explore the tension between the vibrant self and the powerful collective by interweaving their unique voices and instruments. What are the beautiful and terrible things about being individual (unique, unbearably light, alone) or being together (spiritually connected, conforming, relying)? Blending folk band with musical theatre and choral music, composition with devising and improvising, FOUR; INTERWOVEN explores what it means to choose love and togetherness, especially when it's hard.

In the chamber opera DEATH OF THE MOUSE, Noah Magnus employs both raucous humor and bittersweet tragedy to show how the search for meaning unfolds amidst the chaos of urban life. Through a blend of surreal characters including a frustrated woman on an unexpected date, a mysterious fiddler, freeloading squirrels, and a vulnerable mouse; the opera crafts a vivid journey filled with wit and heart.

What we do

NMTP commissions new works of music and theatre that are boldly original. In a time when most new commercial pieces of theatre are sourced from movies or other existing IP, and music is focused on revival, we are determined to seek out the most original corridors for these art forms. We give our artists the time, space and expertise to fully develop a framework for creating original work, and then assist them in developing and executing their project. We focus on commissioning new works, both theatre brought to life by music, and music in which theatricality is a central component.

Programs

Commissioning: We commission two to three full length works every year. We will select artists that pride themselves in originality and individuality while maintaining a level of musical and dramatic sophistication that will present audiences with complex and novel ideas.

Development: Commissioning is only the first stage; it is core to our mission, first and foremost, to partner with composers and writers on long-term development of their work. We customize this process depending on the needs of the artists, working with our actors, designers, and producing partners to provide space, readings, workshops, mentorship, connections, and more, that can be meaningful to the process. We seek, at this time, to have only one to two works in development at a time, ensuring we can give our full focus to each work. As a company that is first and foremost a developmental organization, this is the core of all of our work.

Co-Producing & Presenting: Producing in New York City is an ambitious endeavor, and can often monopolize an organization’s resources. Therefore, our focus is on the developmental process, ensuring we can throw the full weight of our resources behind our commissioned works. That being said we must also ensure those works have premieres after their development. To that end, we work with partners like theatres, agents, producers and presenters to support our artists in getting their works onstage, and also, when appropriate, act as co-producer, ensuring there is a link between development and production, and that each artist has NMTP as a support system as they navigate that stage.
